New Region Added to Baldur's Gate 3 Featuring Over 30 Battles and More Than 70 Items

A new mod created for Baldur's Gate 3 adds an entirely new region called Chionthar Wilds to the game's second act. According to the description on the Nexus Mods page of the mod's creator, SquallyDaBeanz, Act Two Expansion, the product of nearly two years of work, offers players an open area to explore at the transition between the Shadow-Cursed Lands and the city of Baldur's Gate.

According to the information on the mod page, the new region is designed on a scale similar in scope to the wilderness area in the game's first act. This comparison is striking, as the first act is known as the region where players spend more than 30 hours in a typical playthrough before branching off into side routes such as the Underdark or the Mountain Pass.

What's in the new region?

According to the mod's description, Chionthar Wilds includes new quests, dungeons, NPCs, cutscenes, and custom creatures with their own stat blocks. It also adds more than 70 new items and over 30 combat encounters. All of this content is designed for parties between levels eight and ten.

In the Forgotten Realms setting, the Chionthar is known as a waterway that runs along the Sword Coast toward Baldur's Gate. For centuries, the river served as the main trade artery through which barges carried wine, salted pork, and spices between Baldur's Gate and the inland cities. Control of the river's mouth has stood out as a point of tension for generations.

How to access the mod?

To install the mod, it is enough to download the .pak file from Nexus Mods, drop it into the mod folder, and enable it through the in-game Mod Manager; this process takes a few minutes. Once the game is launched, when the party crosses the bridge stretching from the Shadow-Cursed Lands to Baldur's Gate, the road no longer opens directly into the third act as before; instead, they encounter new NPCs, a new battle camp, and an unexplored region of Faerûn.

There are also options for players who want to jump directly into Chionthar Wilds with a new save. According to the mod page, there is a Quickstart option that has the party begin inside the Wilds with equipment, experience points, and paid companions. Alternatively, a spell scroll placed in the tutorial chest on the Nautiloid makes available a portal that opens directly into the region from the very beginning of the game.

According to the mod's creator, Act Two Expansion is still in beta, and the rough edges that come with that can be seen. The choices and content the mod offers remain confined to its own region rather than carrying over into the third act; in other words, it can easily be skipped like the technically optional Underdark route.
