OpenAI has hired Patreon co-founder Sam Yam and two former executives to lead its product strategy for content creators. Yam said early access to new creator tools will be available at next week's DevDay event.
OpenAI has hired three former Patreon executives to strengthen its product strategy for content creators. Sam Yam, co-founder and chief technology officer of Patreon, announced on social media that he is joining OpenAI to lead its Creator Product unit.
Yam will be joined by Drew Rowny, Patreon's former head of product, and Shannon Ma, head of engineering. Both executives are said to have left their roles in recent weeks.
In his announcement, Yam said that at OpenAI they will work with content creators and offer early access to a new set of tools that he believes will be valuable for creators and their communities. Yam also urged his followers to pay attention to OpenAI's DevDay event taking place next week.
DevDay is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29. Yam also pointed to a post by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman this week hinting that another major announcement is coming.
The move of Patreon executives to OpenAI signals the company's interest in revenue models for content creators. Patreon is known as the platform that formed the foundation of the content subscription economy as we know it.
Yam's departure is seen as another loss for Patreon. The company had announced a comprehensive update roadmap to revamp user features after laying off 20% of its staff in January.
