Xbox Strategy Chief Matthew Ball denied a report that the company is unhappy with GTA 6 pre-order figures, stating that pre-orders are breaking records for Xbox. According to sales tracker data, PS5 pre-orders are outpacing Xbox Series X|S by more than a 3:1 margin.
With less than two months to go until Grand Theft Auto 6 hits shelves, the game's early sales figures are already starting to surface. According to data shared by a sales tracker, GTA 6 pre-orders on PlayStation 5 are running at more than three times the rate of those on Xbox Series X/S.
However, Xbox Strategy Chief Matthew Ball has denied a report claiming Microsoft is unhappy with those sales figures.
In a statement on X, Ball said, "We're very happy with GTA 6 pre-orders. The game is breaking records for Xbox, we expect more records to fall throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our pre-order share is in line with our share of the console market."
Ball's assessment that pre-orders "are in line with Xbox's share of the console market" may well be accurate. There are significantly more PlayStation 5 consoles in the market than Xbox Series X/S units. According to sales tracker data, Xbox's 23 percent share of GTA 6 pre-orders translates to 1.3 million units sold and $128 million in revenue. PS5's 77 percent share means Sony has already generated 4.35 million units sold and $426 million in revenue.
Some replies to Ball's post expressed skepticism about his explanation of the figures. The development comes just days after a devastating round of layoffs at Xbox that resulted in Halo Studios handing control of the Halo franchise to Activision.
On the GTA 6 front, the game's marketing campaign includes an installation in Miami, Florida, inviting visitors into Vice City. Many players appear to be planning to take time off work when GTA 6 launches.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
