Rainbow Six Tactics Director: Turn-Based Genre Offers a 'Natural Fit' for the Series' Structure

Martial Potron, game director of Ubisoft's upcoming turn-based tactics game Rainbow Six Tactics, explained why the project was designed as an XCOM-style turn-based tactics game instead of a first-person shooter. According to Potron, the genre felt like a "natural fit" for the development team.

Speaking in an interview with TechRadar Gaming, Potron stated that making the next Rainbow Six Siege game turn-based made sense to the team. "When you look at Rainbow Six, its DNA is tactical," Potron said, emphasizing that the series inherently contains a tactical structure.

"Its DNA Is Tactical, Just First-Person"

Recalling that the series' camera is placed from the player's perspective and that it is a real-time game, Potron said, "But when you look at the whole DNA, finding the best line of sight, finding the best cover, choosing the best targets, paying attention to your operators, destruction... In a way, it's actually very tactical."

Noting that "what if" scenarios are always considered during the game design process, Potron reiterated that the idea of making a tactical Rainbow Six game was "very natural."

Team Experience and the Persuasion Process

Potron said that within Ubisoft Paris, they have experience not only in tactical shooter games but also in turn-based tactics games with Mario + Rabbids. Stating that the team loves both tactical shooters and turn-based tactics games, Potron expressed that the project therefore felt like a natural fit for the team and the genre.

Potron concluded his remarks by saying, "We just needed to convince Ubisoft and the Rainbow Six team."

Rainbow Six Tactics is planned to be released in 2027 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S platforms.
