Micron Halts Production of 2GB GDDR7 Chips for Gaming GPUs, Shifts Focus to AI

Micron is reported to have stopped production and sales of its 2 GB (16Gb) GDDR7 memory chips, with the chips marked as end of life on the company's website. Because Samsung and SK Hynix are the main suppliers, the risk of supply shortages in the short term is said to be low.

Micron is reported to have stopped production and sales of its 2 GB (16Gb) GDDR7 memory chips. The company is discontinuing both the 28 Gbps and 32 Gbps variants. According to a post on X by UNIKO's Hardware, these chips, which are used in some GeForce RTX 50 graphics cards, are now marked as "End of Life" on Micron's website. Tom's Hardware confirmed that the relevant module pages return "No results found."

Micron began supplying 2 GB GDDR7 chips to Nvidia earlier this year. Samsung and SK Hynix stand out as the main suppliers in GDDR7 supply. As a result, Micron's 2 GB module was only used in a small number of Nvidia models, such as retail variants of the GeForce RTX 5060.

Since Samsung and SK Hynix cover the majority of 2 GB GDDR7 modules for the standard RTX 50 retail series, the risk of supply shortages in the short term is said to be low. Micron's uncompetitive position in the 2 GB segment is also cited as making a rapid exit logical in order to free up production capacity.
