How to hide your WhatsApp status from specific people

In WhatsApp, who can see your statuses is determined through privacy options. Users who do not want only one or a few people to see their posts can use the "My contacts except..." option.

"Only share with..." reverses the logic. This time, the people you want to see the status are selected, and the post is opened only to the specified group.

For example, if there are many people in the contact list and you do not want only two people to see your statuses, adding these two people to the "My contacts except..." list is a shorter process. If the status will be shared with only five close friends, the "Only share with..." option can be used.

Thus, instead of blocking people one by one for each status, the sharing audience can be adjusted directly through status privacy.

Will the person you hid your status from receive a notification?

When a person is added to the "My contacts except..." list, WhatsApp does not send a direct notification to the other party about this change. No alert such as "This user hid their statuses from you" appears on the person's phone.

Similarly, there is no public section on the profile showing the status privacy list. Excluded people are managed within the user's own privacy settings.

Still, it is not possible to say that the other party can never notice the status under any circumstances. It is noted that if a mutual friend mentions the shared status or the person sees the post on someone else's phone, they may guess that they are outside the target audience.

Hiding a status and blocking someone on WhatsApp are also not the same action. When a person is excluded only from status privacy, the chat with that person does not automatically close. The person can continue sending messages, and other WhatsApp privacy settings work according to your own preferences.

If the goal is only to prevent a specific person from seeing a shared status, adjusting status privacy is enough instead of making more comprehensive changes across the account.

Does the privacy setting affect old WhatsApp statuses?

If after sharing a status you realize you do not want a person to see it, there is an important detail about changing the privacy setting. In WhatsApp, new choices made for status privacy do not retroactively change the audience of previously published statuses.

For example, if a photo is shared in the morning and a person is added to the "My contacts except..." list in the afternoon, the new privacy preference applies to subsequent statuses. The status published in the morning can complete its duration with the target audience determined at the time of sharing.

If you no longer want the current status to be viewed by that person, you can consider deleting the post and republishing it after changing the privacy setting. In this way, the new status is shared with the updated target audience preference.

Checking the target audience before sharing a status is therefore important. Especially in cases where coworkers, family members, and friends are in the same WhatsApp account, it should be kept in mind that a single privacy choice can also affect subsequent posts.

The sharing audience can be changed again later. The choice made does not force the user to keep sharing statuses with the same people forever.

How to remove WhatsApp status hiding

If you want WhatsApp statuses previously hidden from someone to be shared with that person again, there is no need to unblock them or add a new person. The status privacy list can be rearranged.

In WhatsApp, go to Settings > Privacy > Status and open the "My contacts except..." option. Remove the selection of the person previously excluded and save the change. The new privacy preference will be used for statuses shared from then on.

A person not being able to see a status does not always mean it was deliberately hidden from them.
